Wayne Rooney was yesterday named the ugliest football player in the world. The Manchester United striker, 22, is nicknamed Shrek, despite bagging glamorous Coleen McLoughlin, 21, who he is due to wed this summer.
But a third of the 2,500 women polled by www.thepeoplesclub.com said he was the worst-looking player in football.
Second place went to Barcelona’s Ronaldinho, 27, and Carlos Tevez, 23, Rooney’s strike partner, was named the third ugliest. Gangly Liverpool frontman Peter Crouch, 26, was fourth and Brazilian Ronaldo, 31, now at AC Milan, finished off the top five.
Website spokesman Carl Christensen said: "Although not blessed with good looks, Rooney would be in most people’s Fantasy Football team – and he is the most picked player on our website. The survey shows that money can’t buy you looks, but money sure does help an ordinary guy get a good-looking girl.
"You have to look no further than Peter Crouch and Abbey Clancy."
Others on the list include England defender Rio Ferdinand, 29, Cardiff’s former Liverpool hero Robbie Fowler, 32, Real Madrid star Ruud van Nistelrooy, 31, Everton’s Phil Neville, 31, and Norwich’s Luke Chadwick, 27.
