For all Daily Star and Daily Star Sunday competitions promoted in the paper via SMS and requiring the starting reply DSXTRA or DSSXTRA, text costs £2 per message plus standard network charge. Winners for each competition will be selected at random from all correct entries received by 23:59 on the 4th of the calendar month following the promotion. Here are the full terms and conditions for Express Newspapers competitions. Please read these carefully before entering one of our competitions. By entering a competition published in any of the newspaper and/or online editions of the Daily Express, Sunday Express, Daily Star, Daily Star Sunday and any other newspaper, magazine and online publications produced by Express Newspapers the subsidiary of Northern and Shell plc ("N&S"), from time to time ("publications") the participant in the competition agrees to the terms and conditions set out here.
These terms and conditions and any terms and conditions set out in the competition advertisement or promotional material are referred to as the "rules". In these rules, the term "competition(s)" includes games, promotions and the like, "Editor" or "Editors" means the editor(s) from time to time of the online editions of the newspapers and other online publications published by N&S and "participant(s)" means any person(s) taking part in a competition. The individual competition requirements must also be met.
1 Unless otherwise stated in a competition advertisement the promoter of all competitions contained within the publications is Northern and Shell plc whose principal place of business in the United Kingdom is [The Northern & Shell Building, Number 10 Lower Thames Street, London, EC3R 6EN] (the "promoter").
Eligibility of participants
2 To enter a competition all participants must comply with the entry requirements stated in that competition advertisement and/or promotional material. The participant acknowledges that failure to comply with the rules may result in his or her disqualification from the competition.
3 Unless otherwise stated, entry to all competitions is restricted to participants who are residents of the United Kingdom and 18 years of age or over.
4 Where participants are required to enter in one of several age categories, the relevant category for each participant shall be that category appropriate to the participant�s age on the closing date of the competition. A participant is assumed to be of a certain age up to and including the day prior to his or her next birthday.
5 Employees of N&S or its associated companies or their agents or members of their families are not eligible to enter any competition in a publication.
6 If a promoter other than N&S or its associated companies is named in a competition advertisement as the promoter of the competition, employees of that specified promoter or its associated companies or their agents or members of their families are not eligible to enter that competition.
7 The promoter has the right at any time to require participants to provide proof of identity and/or eligibility to enter the competition. If a participant is required to provide such evidence and fails to do so, the Editor may, in his or her discretion, decide to disqualify a participant from the competition or withdraw a prize.
8 When requested, the participant must provide full, truthful and accurate information to requests for evidence of eligibility to participate and must not mislead the promoter. If the Editor believes that information being provided does not comply with this provision, the Editor may, in his or her discretion, disqualify a participant from the competition or withdraw any prize.
9 Unless otherwise stated in the competition advertisement or promotional material, only one entry per individual or household is permitted. In the event that an individual or members of a single household wins or win more than one prize in a competition, only the first of these prizes won will be awarded to that individual or household.
10 The determination of the Editor shall be final in relation to the eligibility of any participant. No correspondence will be entered into about a decision regarding eligibility.
Receipt of Entries
11 Unless otherwise stated, entries must be received by the promoter no later than the published closing date for the competition.
12 Proof of posting, emailing, sent SMS ("short messaging service")/text message, sent MMS ("multimedia messaging service")/picture message/video message will not be accepted as proof of receipt of entry by the promoter and no responsibility is accepted by the promoter for entries lost, delayed, mislaid or for any technical failure or for any event which may cause entries to the competition to be delayed, deleted, misdirected, disrupted or corrupted.
13 The promoter is not responsible for incomplete, unclear, incomprehensible or distorted entries. Such entries will be void.
Method of Participation and Payment to Enter
14 Where a participant uses a pay-to-enter route for a competition each entry must be accompanied by the appropriate entry fee.
15 Premium Rate Telephone Call
Where the selected method of entry is by premium rate telephone call:
The cost of the telephone call will be set out in the competition advertisement or promotional material.
The cost of calling premium rate telephone lines as specified in the competition advertisement or promotional material is based on calls made using a BT landline. The cost of calls made from public pay phones, mobile telephones and other lines may vary and will depend on the network operator used by the participant.

16 SMS/Text Message, MMS/Video Message or Photo Message
Where the selected method of entry is by premium rate SMS/text message, MMS/video message/photo message:
The competition entry fee payable to N&S for sending the SMS/text message, MMS/video message/photo message will be set out in the competition advertisement or promotional material.
Participants should note that the final cost of the SMS/text message, MMS/video message/photo message to the participant may vary and will depend on the participant�s agreement with his or her network provider.
17 Internet
Where the selected method of entry is by e-mail or internet submission:
The cost of such submission will be free subject to any arrangement between the participant and his or her internet service provider.
18 The promoter is not responsible if the telephone call, SMS/text message, MMS/video message/photo message, e-mail or Internet entry made by the participant is disrupted, unclear, distorted, undelivered, delayed or affected in any way beyond the reasonable control of the promoter or any third party employed by the promoter to administer competition entries. The promoter is not liable for any charges incurred by the participant for any such telephone call, Internet connection, SMS/text message, MMS/video message/photo message or e-mail.
19 The participant confirms that he or she has obtained the permission of the bill payer before entering the competition by premium rate method.
Ownership of Entries
20 By submitting an entry, videos, photographs, and other material as part of a competition entry the participant transfers to N&S ownership in and to the submitted entry, video, photograph or material and grants an unlimited, non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty fee, worldwide licence to N&S to and to permit third parties to publish, use, amend, adapt, revise, distort and copy each entry, video, photograph or other material submitted and generally to issue copies and communicate the entry, photograph or other material to the public. Editors reserve the right to publish all entries in whole or in part or use them in any way they think fit without the participant�s permission or payment for such use but subject always to the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1988.
Return of Entries
21 Unless otherwise stated, N&S accepts no responsibility for the return of entries, videos, photographs or other personal effects or for loss or damage to such items.
22 Where materials are returned to the participant, N&S accepts no responsibility for the safe return of any material or its return in an undamaged condition or any liability for loss of or damage to such material.
Change of Rules
23 The Editors reserve the right to change the rules applicable to any competition or to void any competition at any time and for any reason. In the event that any competition is so voided, all entry fees will be returned.
24 In the event of an error, howsoever caused, whether a printing error or otherwise and whether obvious or otherwise, which affects the competition in any way, the Editors reserve the right to administer the competition as though the error had not occurred. Where the Editors deem it appropriate and/or feasible N&S will notify participants of the error and correct it either through the relevant online newspapers or through any other suitable medium.
25 Where necessary in order to determine an outright winner or winners to a competition, Editors reserve the right to request participants to take part in an eliminating contest (or 'tie breaker'). Where for any reason there are more winners than prizes on offer the Editors reserve the right to conduct an independent draw to determine the winner or winners of the prizes.
26 Prizes will be awarded in accordance with the rules of the competition.
27 There is no cash alternative to the prizes and prizes may not be substituted for other prizes, unless specifically stated in the competition advertisement or promotion. N&S offers prizes subject to availability and reserves the right to substitute prizes for a similar item of equal or higher value if the stated prize is not available.
28 Unless otherwise specified, prizes may take up to 8 weeks to be delivered.
29 If a cash prize is stated to be payable to a winner, the prize will be provided by way of a cheque made payable in the name of the winning participant. Cheques will not be issued to third parties.
30 Participants are responsible for paying all taxes, duties and any other levies on prize winnings.
Winning entries
31 Names of winners and results of competitions will be available online at and may be published in the relevant editions of the publications as circumstances permit.
32 If the winner of a competition informs the promoter that he or she is unable to take up a prize for any reason, the promoter reserves the right to award it to an alternative winner, in which case the first winner chosen will not be eligible for any share of the prize whatsoever.
Publicity of Winning Entries
33 The participant agrees to his or her name and county of residence being published in connection with a winning entry in the competition and agrees to the promoter disclosing his or her name and county of residence on the promoter�s website and to any individual requesting the name of the winning participant.
34 The participants agree not to enter into correspondence or give interviews with any person other than the promoter on any matters arising from any competition without the prior written permission of N&S.
35 The participant agrees to co-operate with the promoter including its photographers or reporters to publicise their win as N&S deems reasonably requires.
36 Neither the promoter nor N&S (if the promoter is not N&S) is under any obligation to publish any competition entries supplied.
Participants� Obligations and rights of Editors
37 The participant confirms that:
He or she has the right to submit the competition entry in accordance with the rules of entry;
all entries submitted by the participant are legal, and truthful and comply with all applicable laws, regulations, standards or codes of practice;
all entries submitted do not infringe copyright, design, privacy, publicity, data protection, trademark, or any other rights of any third party; and all entries do not contain any abusive, obscene, threatening, libellous or defamatory material.
38 The participant has sole responsibility for his or her entries and each participant agrees to indemnify the promoter and keep the promoter fully and effectively indemnified on demand from and against all actions, claims, losses, liability, proceedings, damages, costs, expenses, loss of business, loss of profits, business interruption and other pecuniary or consequential loss (including legal costs and expenses) suffered or incurred by the promoter and/or N&S and arising directly or indirectly out of the publication of any competition entry submitted by the participant.
39 Failure to comply with any of these rules may result in the disqualification of the entry. The Editors reserve the right to disqualify any entry at their absolute discretion and may edit, reject or remove entries if the Editors believe that the entries do not comply with the provisions of paragraph 37 above or are deemed by the Editors to be inappropriate.
40 The Editor's decision is final in all matters concerning a competition.
Data Protection
41 All personal data provided by a participant to the promoter in connection with a competition entry will be used by the promoter, its employees, suppliers, contractors and agents to process the competition, to inform winning participants of their winning entry and to distribute prizes. A participant�s personal data, including any messages, video footage or photographs may also be provided to the police, law enforcement agencies or other regulatory bodies as part of any police, compliance, complaint or other investigation.
Telephone calls may be recorded solely for the purposes of ensuring that entries are correctly evidenced and for staff training purposes.
42 All personal data provided by participants will be processed by N &S in accordance with N & S�s Privacy Policy set out at the following hyper-link: N & S reserves the right to use participants� personal data to inform them of future promotions. If participants do not wish for their personal data to be used for this purpose then they must �opt out�

43 Limitation of Liability
44 To the fullest extent permitted by law, the promoter accepts no liability for any loss or damage of any nature whatsoever and howsoever arising out of or in connection with a participant�s entry into the competition (including the use of any prize) and the promoter�s use of the entry whether due to inaccuracy, error, omission or any other cause and whether on the part of the promoter (or its servants, agents or any other person or entity).
45 If the promoter is liable to a participant for any reason (other than death or personal injury arising from the promoter�s negligence), the promoter�s liability will be limited to £100. Notwithstanding any other provision of these rules, the promoter does not attempt to exclude or limit its liability for death or personal injury resulting from its negligence in any way.
46 To the fullest extent permissible by law, the promoter does not make any express or implied warranties, representations or endorsements whatsoever with regard to the competition prizes or any information, service or product provided in connection with a competition.
Participants from outside the United Kingdom
Unless otherwise stated, all competitions in the publications are controlled and operated by the promoter from its offices in the United Kingdom. Players who enter a competition from outside the United Kingdom do so on their own initiative and are responsible for compliance with all applicable local laws. If participation in a competition or the supply or use of a competition prize are contrary to or infringe any applicable law in a participant�s jurisdiction(s), the participant is not authorised to enter the competition.
General Provisions
47 If any provision or term of these rules shall become or be declared illegal, invalid or unenforceable for any reason whatsoever, such term or provision shall be divisible from the rest of the rules and shall be deemed to be deleted from them.
48 Any failure or delay by the promoter in enforcing an obligation or exercising a right, under these rules, does not amount to a waiver of that obligation or right or any other obligation or right.
49 The participant acknowledges that he or she has not agreed to these rules in reliance on any statement or representation, except in so far as the representation has been incorporated into these rules. The participant irrevocably and unconditionally waives any right the participant may have to claim damages and/or to rescind these terms and conditions by reason of any misrepresentation (other than a fraudulent misrepresentation) not contained in these terms and conditions.
50 These rules and all competitions included in the publications are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales and the English Courts will have exclusive jurisdiction to determine any proceedings in connection with this competition.
