Ringo Starr was given a Hard Day’s Night by Liverpool yesterday after saying he misses nothing about his home city.
More than 1,500 Scousers blitzed council phone lines and websites accusing the Beatles’ drummer of betraying his roots.
Ringo made it clear on BBC1’s Friday Night With Jonathan Ross show that he had no intention of returning to Merseyside.
Asked if there was anything he missed about Liverpool he laughed and told Wossy, 47: "Er ... no."
Sensing he might have dropped a clanger, Ringo, 67, who grew up in the city’s Toxteth district with his mum Elsie, went on: "Look, I love Liverpool.
"I was a child in Liverpool. I grew up in Liverpool. My family members are in Liverpool." Chuckling, he held his thumb and index finger apart, saying: "I was this close to coming back."
Ringo, who was promoting his new album Liverpool 8, had been in the city to launch their European Capital of Culture celebrations.
Yesterday Liverpool Council leader Warren Bradley said: "It’s not helpful on national TV. But that is Ringo’s style – to be flippant.
"He came to Liverpool and did a PR job for himself. And what we got from him being home paid dividends for us here and abroad."
But angry Gemma Dunn, from Allerton, Liverpool, said: "He was just self-indulgent and arrogant."
