Thirty-five years after his death, Noel Coward is still considered the master of the beautifully constructed, effortlessly witty play. This excellent BBC collection has seven discs of his work, including Hay Fever with Penelope Keith and Paul Eddington, A Song At Twilight with Paul Scofield and Deborah Kerr, Tonight At 8.30 with Joan Collins, Me And The Girls with Tom Courtenay and The Vortex being revived in London next month starring Felicity Kendal.

Action-packed political thriller that feels like CSI in the Middle East. Jamie Foxx is the FBI agent who vows revenge when a group of terrorists target an American base in Saudi Arabia leaving 100 dead. Foxx and his gung-ho team gradually win the respect of local colonel Ashraf Barhom. Marred by simplistic attitudes and tear-jerking sentimentality, the film really comes alive during intense action sequences that set the heart racing.

Man About Town (Cert 15) |

Ben Affleck has been winning great reviews for his directorial debut Gone Baby Gone and maybe thats where his future lies after a string of recent acting flops. This wildly uneven affair was never released to British cinemas and you will soon understand why. Affleck is a Hollywood talent agent stuck in a loveless marriage and with a career going nowhere fast. A vengeance-seeking screenwriter adds to his woes. John Cleese co-stars.

Efficient, workmanlike screen version of a true-life story from the Seventies. Terrence Howard is the swimming coach who lands a temporary job at a Philadelphia community centre in 1973. Coach and centre have both seen better days but the facility does have a pristine pool. Soon Howard is coaching a competitive team, fighting the racism of rival white coach Tom Arnold and giving everyone a better future. Predictable but decently handled.

Woody Harrelson gives an outstanding performance in this laid-back conspiracy thriller set in the shady world of Washington politics. Harrelson is a witty, well-educated gay Southerner beloved by the lonely rich women of the city seeking a perfect gentleman companion for a night at the opera. A raw, heartfelt performance from Maggie Gyllenhaal is the main attraction in this grimly compelling tale of a womans struggle to pick up the pieces of her broken life. Released from prison after a three-year sentence for robbery, heroin addict Sherry (Gyllenhaal) returns to New Jersey clinging to the hope that she can get a job, stay clean and reconnect with her daughter. The reality is very different in a downbeat drama with a gritty authenticity.

Rufus Wainwright |
Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall (Polydor) |
Back in 2006, Wainwright decided to re-enact Judy Garlands legendary 1961 show at Carnegie Hall. A slightly odd decision but if anybody could pull it off, Rufus could. And he did. This is the double-disc recording, with the camp crooner paying tribute to the wonder of Judy. |

Long known for her love of performing covers during her live shows, Chan Marshall here dedicates a whole album to the songs and vocalists that have influenced her. From Frank Sinatras New York through to Billie Holidays Dont Explain, every song here is given a sly spin and a fresh feel. Wonderful. |

Garth Brooks |
The Ultimate Hits (Sony BMG) |
Quite how this cowboy hat-wearing rube has managed to become the fastest-selling solo artist in music history is one of those mysteries that utterly defies rational explanation. Like the election of fellow good ol boy George W Bush, his triumph feels not only like an affront to decency, taste and common sense but also something that could only happen in America. This two-disc and one DVD best of wont do much to enlighten you as to his appeal, unless you happen to particularly enjoy bland, middle-of-the-road country tunes about rodeos, drinking and driving pick-ups. Yee-ha. |

KD Lang |
Watershed (Nonesuch) |
LANGS first album of original music since 2000 sees her re-embracing the beautiful balladry of Ingenue, infusing everything with a gentle country twang in the process. Sounding more than ever like a velvet-voiced Patsy Cline, Lang is on near-perfect form on this astonishing album. |

Liverpool: The Number Ones Album (EMI) |
To celebrate Liverpool becoming the European Capital of Culture, a bunch of Liverpudlian artistes have come together to perform some of the best-known Liverpudlian songs. Things get off to a middling start with Atomic Kitten and their version of Anyone Who Had A Heart but rapidly pick up with Thea Gilmore and Mike Cave taking on You Spin Me, OMD doing Whole Again, and Shack playing Day Tripper. Quite fun and all proceeds go to charity. |

Lupe Fiascos The Cool (Atlantic) |
The next rap superstar returns with a stunning offering that neatly balances melodies, beats and the inevitable concept album kookiness (this one has got something to do with hustlers and zombies). If you dont mind stepping over some of the dead wood included here, this is a winning release. |
