Sol goes AWOL
03/02/06
ARSENAL fear Sol Campbell has quit football for good.

The frantic Gunners failed to get in touch with the England defender yesterday and he was missing from a 'recovery' session at their training ground near St Albans, Herts.

Campbell gifted West Ham two first-half goals in Arsenal's 3-2 home defeat on Wednesday.

And we can reveal it was Campbell himself, not boss rsene Wenger, who ended his participation

in the match at the interval. "That is it, I've had it with this game," he is understood to have uttered.

Despite pleas from players, including Thierry Henry and Freddie Ljungberg, Campbell changed quickly and dashed away from Highbury.

Concerned club officials tried yesterday to contact the 31-year-old who was said by Wenger to be in a poor "mental state" on Wednesday night.

Even fellow England star Ashley Cole - one of his closest pals at the club we was unable to track him down.

"He was very down as he felt he had made mistakes," said Wenger after the game. "He felt guilty - Sol was not well at all."

If Campbell does carry out his quit threat - which seems to have been sparked by criticism of his recent performances - it will be a huge blow to Wenger.

Sven Goran Eriksson, who saw Campbell's Highbury howlers, will also miss a potentially important player for the World Cup.

Arsenal last night confirmed Campbell would miss tomorrow's clash at Birmingham, claiming he had been given a day off.

There was more bad news for Wenger last night with full-back Lauren due to have a knee operation in Barcelona that is almost certain to keep him out for the rest of the season.
