Musician and bandleader Jools, 47, hosts Later... With Jools Holland on BBC2. Swinging The Blues Dancing The Ska is the latest album from Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra (Radar).
CHRISTOPHER HOLLAND: BROTHER, SUN, SISTER, MOON (Beautiful) He sounds like a cross between Brian Wilson and Britpop. He uses beautiful chord changes you dont hear much any more - think Burt Bacharach. His lyrics are charming, too.
CHAS & DAVE: CHAS & DAVES GREATEST HITS (Rockney) They have an encyclopedic knowledge of music and can put their finger on what the traditional London sound really is.
BESSIE SMITH: THE EMPRESS OF THE BLUES (Universe) One of the greatest singers of all time. There have been just a handful as fantastic in the past century. I liked it at 18 and it still sounds good to me now.
SOLOMON BURKE: THE BEST OF SOLOMON BURKE (Curb) He is the king of soul. Everyone that followed, like Otis Redding, took inspiration from him. He invented a style but sadly has since been much overlooked.
KT TUNSTALL: EYE TO THE TELESCOPE (Relentless) KT makes anything sound good. I have a tendency to like the voice, not the song. When the right person sings something, thats what makes me love it.
ALBERT AMMONS: 1936-1939 (Classics) Theres more to him than boogie-woogie piano. Whenever I come back to this, I always find something refreshing that I never noticed before. I think thats a really important quality of good music.
