Chelsea Flower Show garden for Pop
30/04/07
The "godfather of punk" Iggy Pop has gone green fingered for the Chelsea Flower Show.

Pop, 60, famous for inventing the stage dive, is lending his name to a garden created by charity The Children's Society.

The US wildman, born James Newell Osterberg, whose stage antics once included smearing raw meat and peanut butter over his chest, has taken a keen interest in plans for the 19-and-a-half foot-long garden.

The garden, Lust for Life, has been named after the star's famous single.

Pop, a former heroin addict, said of the garden: "Lust for Life is full of optimism as young people should be...but too many aren't.

"I'm honoured that The Children's Society's garden is inspired by my music and wholeheartedly support the work that they do - they rock."

The Children's Society Garden centres around an arc of water, which will be programmed to the beat of the Lust for Life single.

There will also be three "dream bubbles" inspired by the bubbles in Roald Dahl's The BFG.

Richard Johnson, head of media at The Children's Society, said: "Punk and petunias don't normally mix, but our garden inspired by Iggy Pop is bringing a bit of rock n' roll to Chelsea."

The garden, sponsored by Ecclesiastical Insurance, will go on show at the Chelsea Flower Show in London from May 22.
